Memorial Stones

The Miscarriage Association of Ireland are delighted that by the end of 2008 we will have three Memorial Stones in various locations, and the promise of a fourth coming soon. These stones are dedicated to all babies lost through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and all babies whose lives were too short. Some babies have their own resting place in a family plot or a grave but some who only got to share our lives briefly do not and so their families sometimes need a memorial or a nice peaceful place to visit and think of them.

See below for details of individual Memorial Stones.

If you know a cemetery or location in your part of the country that would have a suitable place for a Memorial Stone, please contact us and we will see if arrangements can be made to place a stone there.
  Memorial Stone
Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin

The Miscarriage Association of Ireland have a Memorial Stone in Glasnevin Cemetery, Noth County Dublin. It is dedicated to all babies lost through miscarriage. Some babies lost through late miscarriage are already buried in Glasnevin in the Holy Angels' Plot and their parents find comfort in being able to visit their graves and place flowers there on their anniversaries, at Christmas time and on other special days.

With the placing of our Memorial Stone, all babies lost through miscarriage, some of whom went straight to heaven without the comfort for their parents of having a final resting place, can be commemorated on their special days also.

As the Holy Angels' Plot is a special place for all babies who have sadly died at different stages of their tiny lives, the Miscarriage Association feel that having this Memorial Stone would make all parents feel a little less isolated than they already do and will benefit them greatly by making them feel welcome and giving them a setting that is serene, quiet and peaceful for their grief.

This Memorial Stone was placed in November 1999 by Miscarriage Association of Ireland

Memorial Stone
Deansgrange Cemetery, Co. Dublin

The Miscarriage Association of Ireland were delighted to place our second Memorial Stone in the Plot of the Angels in Deansgrange Cemetery on Saturday 11th October 2008.

We are very grateful to Catherine Keenan and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for their assistance and cooperation with this. We would  also like to acknowledge John Grimes, John McCann, Wayne and all the workers who took on the project of upgrading the Plot of the Angels and have made it a beautiful tribute to over 750 babies who are buried there. This was obviously a labour of love.

    Memorial Stone
St. Theresa's Church, Donore Avenue, Dublin 8.
'Never to have seen
but to have dreamed
Never to have held but to have felt
Never to have known
but to have loved'

The Miscarriage Association of Ireland unveiled our third Memorial Stone in the grounds of St. Theresa's Church, Donore Avenue, Dublin 8, on Sunday 9th November 2008. It was dedicated and blessed by Fr. Sean McArdle and Rev. Sonia Hicks immediately prior to our Annual Service of Remembrance that day. The Miscarriage Association of Ireland is in it's 20th Year this year and our Annual Service has long been held in this church.
We are very grateful to Fr. Sean McArdle for all his assistance with, and placing of, this Memorial Stone and for his continued support of our Annual Service of Remembrance and the Miscarriage Association of Ireland in general.

    Memorial Stone
St. Michael’s Cemetery, Athy, Co. Kildare

In April 2009, The Miscarriage Association of Ireland placed our fourth Memorial Stone, our first outside Dublin, in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Athy. This stone was dedicated by Fr. Joe McDonald and Fr. Seery following the Cemetery Mass on Wednesday 17th June 2009.

As representatives of The Miscarriage Association of Ireland Marie, Yvonne and I arrived in St. Michael’s Cemetery at 8pm, just before the Mass was about to start. There was quite a large number of people, all there to remember and pay tribute to the people interred there, very special people in their lives. The altar was placed just in front of Our Lady's Grotto, at the base of which stood our Memorial Stone. Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Joe McDonald, and Fr. Seery.

After Mass was the dedication of the Memorial Stone, which reads

Behold, I have carved you on the palms of my hands.” (Isaiah 49:16).
In memory of our precious little babies, who never got the opportunity to share our lives with us, but will live in our hearts forever.
“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).
Erected by the Miscarriage Association of Ireland 2009.

The dedication was a very moving experience as it highlighted awareness and gave significance to all those little lives, who perhaps had previously been unacknowledged. It is quite emotional to come in contact with people who have had the sad experience of miscarriage and who may not ever have had the opportunity to acknowledge the loss of their baby. The resting place of this Memorial Stone is very fitting and if anybody happens to be in the area of St. Michael’s Cemetery, it is well worth a visit.

We are very grateful to Karen Carolan from Athy for making the first phone call and wasting no time in keeping up the momentum to see it through to placement and this very special day of dedication. Karen herself collected the Memorial Stone from the stone works in Glasnevin in Dublin and brought it to St. Michael’s Cemetery in her car. Her phonecall to us and all her hard work has made such a positive difference to so may people.

We would also like to thank Paul Lawlor, from St. Michael's too for his part in bringing this to fruition, Fr. Joe McDonald, Fr. Seery and Patricia Kelly. All involved should be very proud of this very special Stone in memory of all the little ones who never got an opportunity to share our lives with us but will live on in our hearts forever.
